Coronavirus is officially known as Covid-19:

  • Covid-19 is a viral infection targeting the lungs.  Fever and coughing are the most common symptoms, however it can develop into pneumonia and difficulty with shortness of breath.

  • Over 80 percent of people have mild symptoms. They likely don’t develop pneumonia.

  • 14% are affected severely with significant difficulty breathing and problem with getting oxygen in blood because of lung infiltration

  • 5% result in more critical symptoms.

  • If you are experiencing progressive difficulty with breathing beyond a regular cold-like symptoms, please call your primary-care’s office regarding appropriate protocol for a check-up.

  • Greatest risk is to elderly, very young children and baby, as well as those who have immune compromise related illness.

  • Store food, in case you need to self-quarantine or stay in for other preventive reasons.

    • Lentils and rice are handy dry goods, frozen vegetables to last you and your family for at least 1-2 week.

  • In absence of a vaccine, keeping up your immune system is the best option for all of us.

  • Soups and stews are ideal meal preparations that will support good hydration, digestion and nourishment.

  • Root vegetables, squashes, and lentils are best ingredients to make the base of your soup or stew.

  • Baking your squashes and root veggies is also a good option.

  • Beneficial green veggies: kale, broccoli, brussels sprout, cauliflower, cabbage, asparagus, celery, fennel root – best cooked as stir-fry, but not over-cooked.

  • Beneficial herb spices: Fresh rosemary, fresh thyme, basil, and oregano are good herbal medicines to add to your diet. Cook with rosemary, thyme, oregano – add basil on top, rather than cooking.

  • Warming spices to support circulation, immune system and lungs: Ginger powdered and fresh, Garlic powdered and fresh, onion powder, turmeric, clove, cinnamon, black pepper, and long pepper.

  • Good quality sleep, good hydration, healthy meals, and stress reduction are foundations of health.

What to do with progression beyond a mild cold-like illness?

If you develop symptoms that go beyond mild cold-like symptoms and are developing lung and breathing issues, you need to call your primary care or local medical center.  Ask them about getting tested. Do not leave your home, unless advised to do so. Most likely, you will be asked to stay home and be monitored remotely, unless medical care is required. It is likely medical care will come to you!
